15 grand castles that render the spirit of medieval Europe

Good list, but as a resident of Scotland's capital I must protest the absence of Edinburgh Castle - one of the most iconic castles in Europe, and deservedly so. I mean, as well as being quite ridiculously grand and picturesque, it's built on an extinct volcano...

#12 Valad "The Impailer" Tepes (you can guess what his "Kink" was), also most of the Castles throughout Europe are in ruins as a. They are too far gone and you would be (re)building from scratch, b. 90% of those that have survived are Museums because c. the Maintenance, Upkeep and Operating Cost is a killer. The Germans and the French had a uncanny nack for destroying each other Castles. Toured the Rhine from Amsterdam to Switzerland, there are NO fully restored Castles and only a few partially restored and have been in the restoration process for many decades. (for all the reasons listed).

Just for the record, Bran castle was never owned by Vlad Țepeș (one of the origins of the Dracula stories)ș the "legend" was created by the Romanian tourist bureau. Vlad's actual castle was in the south and destroyed by an earthquake.
