A man has been building a huge cathedral by hand for 53 years! 7/18/2016 •

This old man devoted all his life to constructing a Christian cathedral. The most astonishing thing is that he builds it all by himself!

Justo Gallego started constructing a church as far back as 1961 in a small Spanish town of Mejorada del Campo on a land lot he inherited from his parents. When Justo was young, he had to leave the monastery Santa María de Huerta, where he served as a novice, because of tuberculosis. Fortunately, the man got over the disease and decided to create something great in order to thank God for this miraculous recovery.

Since then Justo keeps building the cathedral almost without any days off or vacations. He uses family savings and donations to buy necessary tools and materials, and does all the work by himself with rare exceptions.

Interestingly, the man isn’t a professional architect, engineer or constructer. Moreover, he doesn’t have any plan or scheme of the cathedral, all his ideas are stored in his head!

This unique construction has brought fame to the small town located 20 km away from Madrid. Now many tourists visit Mejorada del Campo in order to see Justo Gallego’s cathedral.

The building has not been finished yet and Justo, who is 91 now, is not at all sure that he will be able to complete the construction. That is why the man is going to make plans of what will happen after he dies.

Unless Justo objects the towns folk should help him complete the job while he is still able to see it. After all he is leaving their town quite a legacy.
