A Spanish matador was killed by a bull for the first time in 30 years! 7/28/2016 •

In spite of numerous protests by various animal rights organizations, bullfights are still regularly held in Spain. Usually, bulls are the ones that lose and die, but this time bad luck came to a matador.

29 year old matador Víctor Barrio was deadly injured during a corrida on July 10, 2016, which was held as a part of Feria del Ángel festival in Teruel, a town on the East of Spain. The bull transfixed the man’s heart and lung with its horn.

In Spain, as well as in some regions of France and Portugal, about 6 thousand bullfights are held annually during which about 30 thousand bulls are killed. Torero is one of the most dangerous professions in the world. Very often, they get various traumas and injuries, some of them become invalids for life.

Within the period of 19 –20 centuries bulls killed 63 matadors, 350 banderilleros, picadors and other assistants. Víctor Barrio’s death is the first matador’s death in recent years. The last one happened in 1985.

According to an old tradition, if a bull kills a torero, its mother should be also killed in order to cut off the bloodline. Animal activists have already initiated a campaign to prevent the slaughter of the innocent animal.

By the way, activists fighting for animal rights have achieved some results by now: bullfights have been forbidden in such Spanish regions as Catalonia and the Canary Islands.
