China's greatest natural wonder: Zhangjiajie National Park 9/5/2016 • David Wilkes
These amazing rock formations seem to be floating in the air...
The first national forest park in China was established in this beautiful nature area in 1982. These amazing rock pillars were depicted in many paintings by ancient Chinese artists, and numerous legends were composed about them...
The most beautiful myths described this miraculous place as the secret retreat of the legendary god of Agriculture. The ancients thought this place was inaccessible for them. They believed the mortals were not allowed to reach the mysterious Zhangjiajie peaks.
Nowadays the place is known worldwide. A lot of tourists come to China to see there strange large mountains, green lakes and deep caves.
Do you remember the planet Pandora from James Cameron's "Avatar"? It was inspired by Zhangjiajie and modeled after its unusual rock formations.
How was these rocks formed? The ice is actively expanding in winter, which leads to erosion. The climate of this part of the country is also very moist, which fosters the growth of the plants on the mountains, and their roots also destruct the rocks.
