Eerie yet beautiful forests by the photographer Oskar Zapirain 3/26/2016 • David Pafford
If elves and trolls really existed they would certainly live in these magical foggy woods located in Northern Spain.
All the photos were taken in beech woods near the town of Oiartzun in Basque Country. The woods are famous for a dense fog that frequently accumulates in its hollows and whimsical trees with branches looking like skinny human arms afflicted by arthritis. Such branches owe their existence to a long history of charcoal production in the area: the trees were deliberately trimmed and later they regrew with short trunks and extremely long branches.
