Barbara Streisand (born 1942) is an American singer, actress and filmmaker who has been active for over six decades achieving recognition in multiple fields of entertainment. One distinction is her status among just a few performers who have been awarded an Emmy (television), Grammy (recording), Oscar (film) and Tony (theater).

When she began her carrer, she performed in night clubs and Broadway theaters in the early 1960s. This brought her to the attention of TV guest hosts and her appearances, led to her signing with Columbia Records for her songs. She insisted that she retain full artistic control, and accepted lower pay in exchange, an arrangement that continued throughout her career.

He debut album in 1963 was titled ‘The Barbara Streisand Album’, winning the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Throughout her recording career, Streisand has topped the US ‘Billboard’ 200 chart with 11 albums- a record for a woman.

With sales exceeding 150 million records worldwide, Streisand is one of the best-selling recording artists of all time. According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), she is one of the highest-certified female artists in the United States, with 68.5 million certified album units trying with Mariah Carey (born 1969), also an American Singer, songwriter and actress as well as a record producer.

Subsequent to her success in the recording industry, she ventured into film by the end of the 1960s.
