Her full name is Mary Louise Streep (born June 22, 1949), an American actress often described as “the best actress of her generation,”. As of 2021, she has received a total of 21 Academy Award nominations, winning three.

She was born in Summit, New Jersey in the U.S., educated at Vassar College (Bachelor of Arts) and her Masters of Fine Art degree is from Yale University.

Since 1975 she has been active in the performing arts, first on stage and then two years later in her film debut in ‘Julia’. She also won a Primetime Emmy Award for her leading role in the miniseries ‘Holocaust’.

Her first Academy Award nomination was for Best Supporting Actress in the film ‘The Deer Hunter’.

In 2004, Streep was awarded the American Film Industry Life Achievement Award by the board of directors, plus in 2011, she received a Kennedy Center Honors.

President Barack Obama bestowed the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor in November 2014. The citation reads, “Meryl Streep is one of the most widely known and acclaimed actors in history. Mrs. Streep has captured our imaginations with her unparalleled ability to portray a wide range of roles and attract an audience that has only grown over time portraying characters who embody the full range of the human experience”.

Well known for her ability to imitate a wide range of accents used in her films, a few include Danish, British, Italian, southern American, a Minnesota accent, and a heavy Bronx accent.
