Dr. Mambalikalathil Sarada Menon, a Padama Bhushan (third highest civilian award of the Indian government) awardee is the first female psychiatrist in India. She is a psychiatrist, social worker, and the founder of SCARF (Schizophrenia Research and Care Foundation), a WHO (World Health Organization) recognised organization for the rehabilitation of the people afflicted by mental disorders. Sarada Menon was born on 5 April, 1923 as the youngest of eight children of her parents in Manglore, a coastal town in the south Indian state of Karnataka. Graduating in medicine from Madras Medical College in 1951, obtaining postgraduate degree of MD in 1957, she successfully completed the Diploma in Psychiatric Medicine at National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), thus becoming the first woman psychiatrist in India. She is also recipient of various awards namely the Best Doctor Award from the Government of Tamilnadu, Special Award of the International Association of Psycho-Social Rehabilitation, Boston, Lifetime Achievement Award of Madras Neuro Trust.

Even at the age of 98, Dr.Sarada Menon is easing the pain of people's mental anguish. She gets up every morning and keeps going. "Because I feel sorry for those who are suffering," she says. "I want to help them in some way or other. I enjoy doing that." She highlighted the importance of the qualities of a good mental-health specialist who can provide psycho-social rehabilitation.
