In Greek mythology, where did the serpent Python live, believed to be the location of the center of the earth?

In Greek mythology, the serpent Python was sometimes represented by a medieval-style dragon. Additionally the Greek’s believed that Python was living at the center of the earth called Delphi.

Delphi served as the seat of Pythia, the major oracle who was consulted about important decisions throughout the ancient classical world. The ancient Greeks considered that the center of the world was marked by the stone monument known as the ‘omphalos’ (navel) that was protected by Python.

In Greek mythology there are different versions and interpretations involving gods and goddesses as well as the mortals. Various accounts exist regarding the name Delphi. One attributes the name Delphi to Delphyne, the she-serpent (‘drakaina’) who lived there and was killed by the god Apollo. Another account portrays the serpent as a male (‘drakon’) meaning Python.
