'The Sound of Music' is a musical film about a young woman named Maria, who becomes a governess to seven children of a retired naval officer. In order of age, the children's names are Liesl, Friedrich, Louisa, Kurt, Brigitta, Marta, and Gretl von Trapp.

Sixteen-year-old Liesl believes she is old enough to know everything and does not welcome the new governess. Yet, as the lyrics to the song 'Sixteen going on Seventeen' reveal, she is actually "innocent and quite naive". Liesl is in love with Rolf, a 17-year-old who delivers telegrams to the Von Trapp household. Unfortunately, in the lead up to the Second World War, Liesl and Rolf find themselves on opposite sides.

In the film, Liesl was played by Charmian Carr (1942-2016). Whilst 'The Sound of Music' is based on true events, the character of Liesl was made up for the film. The story is based on the 1949 memoir of Maria Kutscher (1905-1987), who was the governess of one of the Von Trapp children who had scarlet fever and was too unwell to attend school.

In reality, the Von Trapp family were a singing group of siblings from Austria who emigrated to the United States to avoid the war. They became well known as the 'Trapp Family Singers' until they ceased to perform together in 1957. The eldest child was called Rupert and the eldest girl was Agathe. None of the original names of the children were used in the film.
