Diane Hall Keaton (born 1946) is an American actress known for her multi-faceted personality roles plus her idiosyncratic style on stage and in films. She began her career on the Broadway stage appearing in the original 1968 Broadway production of the musical ‘Hair’.

Active on stage and subsequently in multiple films, she has received numerous accolades and awards. These include an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, two Golden Globe Awards, and the American Film Institute Life Achievement Award.

Keaton was born in Los Angles, California in the United States, to Dorothy Deanne (née Keaton), a homemaker and amateur photographer. Her father John Newton, was a real estate broker and civil engineer. In her early life, it was her mother’s entry into a contest and winning the “Mrs. Los Angeles” pageant for homemakers that inspired her to be an actress and led her to work on stage. She also credits Katherine Hepburn (1912-2003), an American actress who performed on stage, television and film, as her inspiration, because Hepburn played roles as a strong independent woman.

The musical ‘Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical’ reflected the hippie counterculture and sexual revolution of the later 1960s. Several of the songs in the play became anthems of the anti-Vietnam War peace movement. The musical’s profanity, its celebration of sexuality, its irreverence for the American flag, and its nude scene caused considerable controversy.
