Mumbai (also known as Bombay, the official name until 1995) is the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra. According to United Nations, as of 2018, Mumbai was the second most populous city in India after Delhi and the seventh most populous city in the world with a population of 19.98 million.

Mumbai lies on the Konkan coast on the west coast of India and has a deep natural harbour. It has the highest number of millionaires and billionaires among all cities in India.

Susanne Braun, All of the names of the cities were the English versions so the Indian Government gave them back their Indian names, which was what the Indian people wanted. No memories of the 'Raj'

I have some friends from India who tell me that many locals still refer to their city as Bombay.

Darlene Davidson, you're correct. The city was known by locals as Mumbai before the Portuguese came along and called it Bombain in the 16th century - and later anglicised as Bombay by the British in the 17th century.
