Not native to North America, ring-necked pheasants were imported into the U.S. from which country?
These birds are actually native to Asian countries. They were introduced in other countries – as well as in America - only in the latter half of the 19th century. So, in 1881 only 60 pheasants of this kind arrived at the USA. Despite some difficulties with the survival rate, the population was successfully established and today these colorful birds are so common that most people have no idea of their Chinese origin.

We use to see them all the time in michigan, until the farmers knocked down all the old fence rows and the raccoon population exploded.

The first place in the US where China pheasants were released was here in Oregon near a hill on a little town called Lebanon. There used to be a plaque on an old school house about the history of them being released. Sadly, they do not nest well to survive out in the wilds of Oregon and their eggs didn't survive well enough to make them a viable hunting bird. Our Dept of Wildlife Refuge near my town used to have a Pheasant breading program. They would raise the eggs and then release the birds. You could go get a box of the left over eggs. Little small eggs, tasted very rich, but a pain to break due to a thick membrane inside. However, after many many years the dept dropped their breading program. Still have the beautiful tail feathers my bro-in-law used to save for me when he went hunting..

They are almost gone in PA., due to pesticides. and environment. 50 yrs. ago it was common to see them in fields. Sportsmen clubs have tried to repopulate them with little success
