When the Burger King Whopper was first introduced in 1957, it cost 37 cents (equivalent to U.S. $3.26 in 2017). This was a burger that was created by Burger King co-founder James McLamore. He created the burger after he noticed that a rival restaurant was having success selling big succulent burgers.

Because of the size and make up of the rival product, McLamore devised the Whopper and felt that he would have great success with this item. He named it the Whopper because he thought it conveyed "imagery of something big and fulfilling". Other major fast food chains did not release a similar product until the early 1970s. First there was McDonald's Quarter Pounder, and next Burger Chef produced the Big Shef.

In 2017 at its corporate headquarters in Miami, FL, Burger King reported that it has about 15,000 restaurants in over 95 countries. Now the Burger King food chain throughout the world is able to serve more than 11 million customers every day.
