The Chinese name of Amur, Heilongjiang (黑龍江) means "Black Dragon River". It is the fourth longest river in China, third longest river in Russia and tenth longest river in the world, measured from the upper sources of Argun. It has gotten its name after its water, which is dark due to the humus contents. Its length is 4,400 km and area of the watershed is 1,855,000 square kilometres (716,000 sq miles). The name "Amur" is Russian rendering of Mongol term A-mörön for "the great waterway".

River Amur forms the northeast border of China and Russia, and is an extremely important transportation waterway. It flows to the Pacific at an estuary of Nikolayevsk-na-Amure next to the Sakhalin Island

"Long River" is the translation of River Yangtze-kiang (Pinyin: Changjiang) and "Yellow River" is the translation of River Huanghe.
