Centurion is a town in the Republic of South Africa, situated roughly between two of the country's capitals, Pretoria and Johannesburg, and with a population of almost 237,000 inhabitants (as recorded in the 2011 census).

The fossil record shows the possibility of our distant ancestors living there millions of years ago, but it was not populated by modern humans until the 12th century CE. In the 19th century, Dutch and British settlers arrived, and during the Boer wars, the town had the sad distinction of housing arguably the world's first ever concentration camp.

It was originally known as Lyttleton, but in 1967, it was renamed Verwoerdburg, in honour of the former Prime Minister, Hendrick Verwoerd (1901-1966) who had been assassinated the previous year. As he was one of the most ardent proponents of the suppression of the majority population under the Apartheid regime, not surprisingly, after the end of Apartheid, there was an immediate call to change the name of the town, and the politically neutral "Centurion" was chosen, which became its official name in 1995.

Nowadays the town is best known for far happier reasons, as it hosts a cricket stadium that is frequently used for test matches and other international fixtures.
