The American Revolutionary War (1775–1783), the American War of Independence, or simply the Revolutionary War in the United States, was the armed conflict between the Kingdom of Great Britain and 13 of its former colonies in North America, which longed for independence and had declared themselves the United States of America.

At first the fight took place mostly in North America. In 1778 France, waiting for a revenge after its defeat in the Seven Years' War, formed an alliance with the United States. The conflict then grew into a world war with Britain fighting France, Spain, and the Netherlands. Contemporaneous fighting also broke out in India between the British East India Company and the French allied Kingdom of Mysore.

The United States as an independent country was first born in the minds and hearts of its founders: they really wanted to implement democracy and freedom principles, so they had to fight their way through. Still, some of the Americans were loyalists - they supported the British and were called "loyalists" or "Tories". Anyway, 40% - 45% Americans supported the Revolutionary War.
