Mozambique is the only country in the world that has an AK-47 rifle on its flag. There are three countries in the world that have the AK-47 rifle on their "Coat of Arms", they are Zimbabwe, East Timor, and Burkina Faso.

Mozambique's flag was adopted in 1983 by the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) during the civil war in the 1980s. "FRELIMO" started as a nationalist movement fighting for "self-determination" and independence of Mozambique from Portugal (Portuguese colonial struggle)

In 2005 Mozambique parliament held a competition for a new flag design, 169 designs were submitted but the ruling party of Mozambique rejected all entries. Mozambique's opposition party, wanted two symbols removed from the flag, the star (seen as representing the country's communist past) and the AK-47 rifle, which they argued "was incompatible with a country trying to be peaceful after the Mozambique Civil War ( 1977 to 1992)".

Mozambique's ruling party said the "AK-47 represented the nation's struggle for independence", and the star represented "Marxism and Internationalism".

The colors of the flag represent the following, the flag has three equal horizontal bands of "green (top), black, and yellow, with a red isosceles triangle on the hoist side of the flag. In the triangle is a yellow five-pointed star bearing a crossed rifle and a hoe in black superimposed on an open white book.

Green represents the riches of the land, black the African continent, red for the struggle.
