Herod I, also known as Herod the Great (c. 72 - 4 or 1 BCE) reigned as a Roman client king of Judea, historically referred to as the Herodian kingdom.

He is known for his multiple colossal building projects throughout Judea, including his renovation of the Second Temple in Jerusalem and the expansion of the Temple Mount towards its north. Additional building accomplishments include the enclosure around the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron, a city approximately 30 kilometers (19 mi) south of Jerusalem, the construction of the port of Caesarea Maritima, the fortress at Masada, a palace fortress and small city at Herodium.

Herod’s other achievements include the development of water supplies for the city of Jerusalem. He and Cleopatra owned a monopoly over the extraction of asphalt from the Dead Sea which was used in shipbuilding.

Of note however, is the fact that some of his construction projects were started, continued to be built but we’re completed after his death.
