I don’t wish to be argumentative, but Donatello’s “David” is not a carved or curved statue. Perhaps the model for the mold was carved, but the statue itself is cast bronze. Therefore it isn’t the first freestanding carved male nude statue.

I may be wrong but I thought that the statue of David was sculpted out of marble, not carved (curved).

Roslyn Russell, I might be considered to be nitpicking, but I try to adhere to the “say what you mean and mean what you say” rule. That is the reason there are 170,000+ English words in the Oxford English Dictionary. With such a lexicon, it shouldn’t be a problem to get the question’s wording precise.

MRogers, I agree - this is why I didn't choose Donatello, as his 'David' is cast bronze, unlike Michelangelo's 'David', the other best option.
