Silvia, the Queen Consort of Sweden, was born Silvia Renate Sommerlath in Heidelberg, Germany, on 23 December 1943. Her parents were Walther Sommerlath and his Brazilian wife Alice, née de Toledo. The Sommerlath family lived in Sao Paulo, Brazil between 1947 and 1957, where Walther Sommerlath held various positions, including President of the Brazilian subsidiary of Swedish company Uddeholm. The family returned to West Germany in 1957.

Silvia graduated from high school in Düsseldorf in 1963. Between 1965 and 1969 she studied at the Munich School of Interpreting, majoring in Spanish. After graduating, she worked at the Argentinian Consulate in Munich. Between 1971 and 1973, Silvia worked as a hostess trainer with the Organising Committee for the Munich Olympic Games.

Crown Prince Carl Gustaf of Sweden and Silvia met at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. Their engagement was announced on 12 March 1976 when he was already King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. They were married on 19 June 1976, at Stockholm Cathedral. Since then, she is known as "Queen Silvia of Sweden". She is a member of the Lutheran Church of Sweden.

In addition to Swedish, the Queen also speaks German, English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese. The King and Queen have three children: Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Carl Philip, and Princess Madeleine and seven grandchildren.

In 2011, Silvia became the longest-serving queen of Sweden, a record previously held by Sophia of Nassau.
