Halloween is the time for fun, putting on costumes and having parties. Though, some people consider the night of Halloween to be the time of ghosts, witches, vampires and other supernatural beings.
We suggest you enter into the spirit of this ancient holiday with the help of the marvelous song from the animated movie "The Nightmare Before Christmas"!
And now let's talk about the origin of the holiday.
Today, the holiday is celebrated with no reference to pagan rituals. Won't you be surprised to know that the 31st of October is, actually, the last day of the Celtic calendar? The pagan holiday dates back to over 2000 years ago.
The culture of the holiday can be traced back to the Druids era, when the Celts were celebrating Samhain (summer's end). Samhain is said to have been a grand pagan festival with sacred rituals and a lot of bonfires.
Originally, it was the night of honoring the dead. What's even more interesting, the dead were believed to possess the bodies of the living. So, in order to ward off the evil creatures, people had to dress up in animal's skin, thus, confusing the spirits.
The Celts used to leave some gifts and treats outside their houses in order to ensure the plentiful crops next year.
By the way, at first, Americans were not happy with the idea of Halloween celebration. The holiday was brought to the United States by Irish immigrants! Today, it's America's second most favorite holiday after Christmas.
