Potatoes: how much do you know about the 4th most grown crop on the planet?
The vegetable is immensely popular in many countries across the world, but lots of us have only a vague idea of how it is grown. Learn a heap of interesting facts about potatoes with this amazing video showing the whole process from field to factory!
The scientific name of potato is Solánum tuberósum and it belongs to the nightshade family along with tomatoes, eggplants and even tobacco.
Potato fruits are toxic for people. It is enough to eat two or three fruits to get poisoned.
Potato roots that we use for food are actually tubers. The main difference is that roots suck up nutrients from the soil while tubers accumulate them.
The plant is native to the Andes: wild-growing potatoes are still found in some regions of South America. Nobody knows exactly when people started cultivating this vegetable, but it happened as far back as several thousands of years ago!
Interestingly, potatoes were brought to Europe earlier (in 1580) than to North America (in 1621).
Potato is not only tasty when cooked, it also brings a lot of good to one’s health: it is very rich in potassium and vitamin C. It is very starchy as well, so potatoes are not recommended for diabetics and people who want to lose weight since starch is a polysaccharide.
