Who is Bloody Mary?
Have you heard about a cocktail called Bloody Mary? The name is taken from urban legends: some people perform special rituals to meet Bloody Mary. Who is it all about? Let's learn together with QuizzClub team!
There are many variations of the legend and the ritual. We investigated a couple of them especially for you!
Mary I of England is believed to be one of the prototypes of Bloody Mary.
Her name is associated with massacre, due to the cases of execution, though she executed only 287 people, while her father put to death about 72 000 people and her little sister sentenced 89 000 people. However, there's a rumor that Mary used to drink young girls' blood to rejuvenate herself. The day of her death was celebrated as a national holiday alongside with Elizabeth I ascending to the throne.
Some believe that if you articulate her name three times in a dark room before the mirror, her ghost will come to you.
There is an opinion that the popular cocktail Bloody Mary was named in tribute to Mary I of England.
Another version was offered by folklorist Simon J. Bronner in 1988 "American Children's Folklore". According to his notes, Bloody Mary was a character who was murdered in the woods behind Pine Road Elementary School. Girls went to the bathroom and performed a ritual saying "We believe in Bloody Mary" ten times with their eyes shut. Bloody Mary's face would appear in the mirror as they opened their eyes.
Such kind of legends formed the basis for many horror films and stories. The popularity of the ritual is derived from one of the main rules of the seances: the participants have to really "believe" in Bloody Mary, or else she won't appear. That explains the numerous stories from people who "saw" Mary - their unsophisticated belief in supernatural forces could cause the delusion of Bloody Mary's presence.
People also like dressing up like Bloody Mary's character during Halloween.
