When I was there, I drove from Bay of Islands in the northern art of North Island to the southern-most tip of South Island, circumnavigating both islands and staying with local farmers all the way. Also spent a week doing the Milford Sound trek. Unfortunately, I doubt the Kiwi immigration service is looking for permanent settlers like me. My main issue was that I found the price of books to be unusually high (hope that's changed).
