Abandoned Spanish church was transformed into a skate park

Culture Story: Abandoned Spanish church was transformed into a skate park

Built in 1912, the church of Santa Barbara in Llanera was abandoned for some reason and started to ruin. Fortunately, enthusiasts from La Iglesia Skate decided to renovate the building. Now this is a number one destination for local skaters decorated with marvelous murals on its walls and domes!

All the paintings were created by the Spanish street artist Okuda San Miguel, who has gained success due to numerous works in different countries. His style is both original and recognizable.

Now the place is called Kaos Temple and is definitely worth visiting even if you aren’t a skater but just an art-lover.

That is pretty cool artwork. I'm guessing the original builders would not approve though :-)

waste of a beautiful building. But, if there is no other organization interested and it will be kept up then I guess a skate park is better than the alternative.

Considering the church was neglected and deteriorating, I think it is a great way to re-purpose the space and keep it functional. Leaving it to ruin would have been a waste.

Take a building that is unused, abandoned, rundown and, literally, wasting away, and turn it into a location that serves today's youth - providing a "safe haven" for them, so to speak - as well as a place of inspiration, good fellowship, exercise for the body and mind, a "healthy" outlet for their energy and, for some, a sanctuary? In my humble opinion, I think God would approve..... :)

The artwork is definitely rad, but... I don't know... does this seem kinda sacrilegious to anyone else? I mean, they aren't doing anything wrong in itself, but it just seems... irreverent.

Absolutely not. That building was erected in order to provide solace & sanctuary for God's children. I'd say - job well done! :-)
