Amazing and mysterious yew trees of the forest of Kingley Vale
These trees look like they have come out of the tales of the ancients...
Actually, no one knows how old they are. Such methods as ring counting and carbon dating are useless here, as the trunks of these trees are hollow, which is the consequence of their old age.
Put simply, no old wood is left now. Moreover, yews possess a special ability which allows them to terminate their growth for some time and then restart it again.
The trees make a pause, when the environment is unfavorable for them. Yews remain alive anyway and awake when the environment is convenient again. The tree rings are not added during the pause, which also prevents researchers from determining yews' age.
So, these majestic creatures may be from 500 to 5.000 years old! There are claims as high as 10.000, but they, of course, sound unrealistic..
Kingley Vale National Nature Reserve was established here in 1952. Kingley Vale yews are considered rare and unique not only due to their age, but also because of their incredible luck.
These trees weren't destroyed in the 14th century, when most of their European counterparts were hacked down. Thus, we can enjoy the beauty of this magical grove today.
Nowadays this part of a fantasy world created by Mother Nature is a popular place among tourists and professional photographers.
