A mother is 4 times as old as her daughter is, and she is 27 years older than her daughter. How old are they?

This is a mathamatic problem so we will make 2 equations from the question. And by substuting in the equation we can solve it.Let us assume daughter age to be x years, and mother age to be m years.

Then m = 4x.

Substituing m with 4x, then 4x -x =27.

3x = 27.

x =9 age of the daughter.

Mother is 4 times the age of her daughter i.e 9 multiply by 4 =36.

Daughter age is 9 years and her mother is 36 years.

As others have also said, I didn't do the math the same way as in the explanation, but it was easy to work it out mentally. I also hope that we don't see many more of these math/arithmetic exercises.

sftcw, He said the equation made no sense to HIM. They didn't to me, either because I don't remember the math I was taught. But just looking at it and thinking, I (and James Brice) got it.
