According to the US Census Bureau, there were approximately 19.3 million living veterans in the United States in 2014. This number was derived from their 2014 American Community Survey.
Although there are about 21.3 million Veterans, the US Census Bureau only counts those living in the United States, or who live outcountry with a US home address.
This number represents about 6% of the US population.

This smacks of a trick question as it asks how many veterans LIVED in the US and not how many total there were. Some people get their kicks by asking TRICK questions.
