Determined to make bungee jumping a completely safe sport, AJ Hackett and Henry van Asch developed a Bungee Code of Practice in 1989. This code provided the framework for the New Zealand/Australian Bungee Jump Standard. It also helped the two men to create the first commercial company focusing on the adventure sport of bungee jumping. After they started their company, they then went on a quest to discover bigger and more exciting places to bungee jump.

Next for Hackett, he opened commercial bungee operations in Normandie, France, in August 1990, and Cairns, Australia, in August 1990. The Cairns Bungee site was the first purpose-built bungee tower in the world. Later that year, AJ jumped 390 meters from a helicopter in Normandie. This was a world-first and a stunt that got him into the Guinness Book of World Records.

In November 2013 in Quenstown, Zealand, AJ Hackett Bungee celebrated a huge milestone. It marked 25 years of commercial bungy jumping in the place where it all began. Today, there are bungee jump sites located in Las Vegas, USA, and Kuta Beach, Bali, which were started in 1994 and 1995, respectively.

Additionally, AJ’s passion and commitment to growing the sport of bungee jumping internationally continued. In May 2014 he opened new sites in Sochi, Russia, and Sentosa, Singapore.
