Cosby and his wife, the former Camille Hanks, were married in 1964 and had five children together: Erika (born 1965), Erinn (born 1966), Ennis (born 1969 and died 1997), Ensa (born 1973), and Evin (born 1976).
Ennis, their only son, was murdered on January 16, 1997, during an attempted robbery while changing a flat tire on the side of Interstate 405 in Los Angeles.
Cosby's daughter Erinn developed a drug problem as a teenager and in the middle of her sophomore year at Spelman College. This led to a long-term estrangement, although she did reconcile with her father after the Ennis tragedy.
Cosby’s three other daughters have led private lives, but have often contributed to their father’s work in the fields of acting and publishing.
According to the Pennsylvania Biographical Dictionary (Somerset Publishers, Inc., 1999) and IMDb, the Cosbys chose the letter E to represent excellence.
