The Pyramids of Giza, which were built to endure an eternity, have to date done just as expected. From Egypt's Old Kingdom era, they were in fact constructed about 4,500 years ago. These pyramids were built by Pharaohs Khufu (tallest), Khafre (background), and Menkaure (front). The Pyramid of Menkaure actually featured a mortuary temple that was much more complex than other temples, according to the builders.

Altogether, The Pyramids of Giza consist of the Great Pyramid of Giza (known as the Pyramid of Cheops or Khufu and constructed c. 2560–2540 BC), the somewhat smaller Pyramid of Khafre (or Chephren) a few hundred meters to the south-west, and the relatively modest-sized Pyramid of Menkaure (or Mykerinos) a few hundred meters farther south-west.

The pharaohs of Egypt expected to become gods in the afterlife. So, they erected temples to the gods and massive pyramid tombs for themselves, which would be used to prepare them for life in the next world. These tombs were filled with all the things each ruler would need to guide and sustain himself in the next world.

In Giza, each massive pyramid is but one part of a larger complex, including a palace, temples, solar boat pits, and other features. Also, within these pyramids, there are decorated walls that have wonderful scenes about every aspect of life in ancient Egypt. These tombs are not just about how Egyptians died but how they lived.
