The World Series is the annual championship series of Major League Baseball (MLB) and concludes the MLB postseason. First played in 1903, the World Series championship is determined through a best-of-seven playoff and is a contest between the champions of baseball's National League (NL) and American League (AL).

Often referred to as the 'Fall Classic', the modern World Series has been played every year since 1903 with two exceptions: in 1904, when the NL champion New York Giants declined to play the AL champion Boston Americans; and in 1994, when the series was canceled due to the players' strike.

The AL New York Yankees have played in 40 World Series through 2017—winning 27—the most Series appearances, victories, and losses (13) of any Major League Baseball franchise. The Yankees have won three consecutive World Series a record three times: 1936-1938, 1949-51 (also won in 1952 and 1953) and 1998-2000.

No other team to date has come close to the dominance over the World Series the Yankees have in the record books. While other teams have come close, the only other team to string three consecutive World Series wins is the Oakland Athletics (A's) as of the 2017 season. The A's won the Commissioner's Award in 1972—1974.

The AL Oakland Athletics (often abbreviated to A's) are an American professional baseball team based in Oakland, California. The club has won nine World Series championships, the third most of all current Major League Baseball teams.
