In 1973, UCLA superstar center Bill Walton lit up Memphis State for 44 points, setting the championship scoring record, while leading the Bruins to their seventh consecutive National Championship under coach John Wooden.

Walton made 21-of-22 shots on his way to being named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. It was a performance that has been deemed the greatest individual game by a player in championship game history by many of the sport's greatest writers and broadcasters.

The game, played in St. Louis, was also the first championship game played on a Monday night after the semifinals on Saturday. This format has remained ever since. The previous tournaments had the semifinals on either Thursday or Friday with the championship game on Saturday afternoon.

Walton was a three-time National Player of the Year. He also won two NBA titles (Portland and Boston) and was the league's MVP despite being hampered by numerous foot problems throughout his career.

He was inducted into the National Basketball Hall of Fame on May 10, 1993.
