Veteran comedic actor Tim Conway hosted and guest-starred in the first and only episode of “Turn-On”, a half-hour sketch-comedy program, on Wednesday, February 5, 1969. It hit the airwaves at 8:30 pm, Eastern Time, and was cancelled by the American Broadcasting Company before it was over. One ABC affiliate, WEWS TV in Cleveland, Ohio, pulled the plug on the network feed after the show’s first break for commercials.

The premise of “Turn-On” was that a computer produced the show. Its music was generated by a synthesizer, the only set was a white backdrop, there was no laugh-track, and the production credits were aired after each commercial break rather than at the beginning or the end.

The main subject of the jokes was sex. The jokes were presented in rapid succession. The skits were sexually suggestive. Some of the show’s elements were presented in a split-screen format with four panels.

When they saw the broadcast feed—hours before “Turn-On” was slated to run in their own time zones—a number of Pacific Time and Mountain Time stations notified ABC that it would not air. In some places where the show did reach audiences, such as Little Rock, Arkansas and Dallas, Texas (Dallas’ WFAA broadcast it on Sunday, February 9, at 10:30 pm, local time), incensed viewers complained.
