The Packard Motor Car Company had its origin in Warren, Ohio in 1899. The slogan's first usage occurred in an ad dated 1901, and perhaps related to the fact that the young company already had a very prestigious purchaser, William D. Rockefeller. One anecdote often attributed to the slogan is that a secretary of James W. Packard brought him a letter showing concern about the new Packard's reliability. In lieu of the car being too new to have had any catalogs printed, Mr. Packard dictated that the potential customer "ask the man who owns one."
