In the 1981 movie 'Chariots of Fire', the beach scenes associated with the theme music were filmed at West Sands, St Andrews, Scotland. A plaque commemorating the filming can be found there today. The very last scene of the opening titles crosses the 1st and 18th holes of the golf course, Old Course at St Andrews Links.

At the present time, St Andrews and the surrounding area is a popular tourist and sightseeing destination for individuals and families. People love to walk on the sprawling beaches and to have fun performing indoor and outdoor activities at local hot spots or landmarks. East Sands Beach is a particularly family friendly location. It has excellent amenities. There is an excellent play park; life guards are on duty during the peak season. Plus there are more than enough eateries with great food to eat. Located two miles from St Andrews, Craigtoun Country Park is also full of entertaining things to do. Kids flock to this park, especially in the summer months, when there are attractions such as a miniature railway, boats, and crazy golf.
