Addis Ababa has the status of both a city and a state; it is a chartered city which means it is a sovereign state that consists of a city and its dependent territories. In Africa, Addis Ababa is the city that has been and is often referred to as "the political capital of Africa" due to its historical, diplomatic, and political significance to the continent.

It is the location where the African Union (AU), a continental union consisting of 54 countries, is and its predecessor the Organization of African Unity (OAU) was based. Also, it hosts the headquarters of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and numerous other continental and international organizations.
