Bonasera makes a cameo appearance in the 1972 film, The Godfather. He is a funeral director and business owner who moved to America in search of prosperity. The character of Bonasera portrayed by Rod Gnapp was initially going to be played by Frank Puglia. This fictional character was created by Mario Puzo and first appeared in his novel, The Godfather. Francis Ford Coppola's film adaptation also then used the character.

Though he is not a major character, he plays a vital role in revealing the merciful side of main character Vito Corleone. When life takes an unexpected turn for Bonasera and his daughter is assaulted and badly beaten, he wants justice. Her American boyfriend, Kevin Moonan, and his brutish college friend Jerry Wagner, attemped to take advantage of her and failed. Much to Bonasera's chagrin, the two men are released on a suspended sentence. Enraged and embarrassed, Bonasera goes to Don Corleone.

Justice, in Bonasera's view, is killing the two young men. But the Don refuses, pointing out that Bonasera's daughter is still alive. "Let them suffer, then, as she suffers", Bonasera replies. He next offers to pay the Don for meting out this suffering.
