Bruce Lee and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar filmed a legendary fight scene in which 1978 Hong Kong action movie?
"The Game of Death" is an incomplete Hong Kong martial arts film, filmed between August and October 1972, directed, written, produced by and starring Bruce Lee (1940-1973), in his final film attempt. Lee died during the making of the film and over 100 minutes of footage was shot prior to his death. Much of the footage that was shot is from what was to be the climax of the film. American director Robert Clouse was enlisted to finish the film using two stand-ins; it was released in 1978 as "Game of Death", five years after Lee's death.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (b. 1947) was a National Basketball Association star with the Milwaukee Bucks at the time, but his connection to Bruce Lee began before he played professional basketball. They had established a martial arts student-teacher relationship while Kareem was still a college student in Los Angeles.
The basketball great had a starring role as one of the villains (Mantis, the 5th Floor Guardian) in "Game of Death". Bruce, who was 5'8" (1.73 m), pulls off an amazing fight scene with Abdul-Jabbar, who is 7'2" (2.18 m). Kareem filmed his scene in Hong Kong and initially did the movie for free. They based their showdown on the duo’s previous training at Lee’s house.
Bruce Lee died in Hong Kong on July 20, 1973, at the age of 32. There was no visible external injury; however, according to autopsy reports, Lee's brain had swollen considerably. 'Time' magazine named Lee one of the 100 most important people of the 20th century.
