Located in the downtown core of both the financial and artistic core of the city of Portland, Oregon, the Heathman Hotel is within a few blocks of Pioneer Courthouse Square, City Hall, and the renowned Pearl district.

Originally built as the New Heathman Hotel which opened in 1927, the Heathman Hotel is now one of the last remaining historical hotels in Portland. It is included with others such as the Benson Hotel (opened 1912), Imperial Hotel (built 1894), and Governor Hotel (built in 1909 as the Seward Hotel and now the Sentinel Hotel).

When the Heathman opened, wealthy business men, politicians, and upper-class individuals of the day wanted a hotel that would fit their social needs and demand for comfort and excellence. So, a formal opening of the Heathman Hotel occurred in December 1927 in Portland.

In 1984, it was officially listed on the U.S. federal government's National Register of Historic Places.
