The modern Olympic Games were revived by Frenchman Baron Pierre de Coubertin in 1896. The first games of the modern Olympiad were held in Athens, Greece, where the original Olympic Games had taken place. Subsequent games took place every four years and were held in Paris (1900), St.Louis (1904) and London (1908).

The first Winter Olympic Games were held in Chamonix in 1924, the same year that the Summer Olympics were held in Paris for the second time. The Winter games continued to be held in the same year as the Summer Olympics until Lillehammer in 1992 when the Winter games changed to being held between (2 years after/before) the Summer games.

By 2028, the XXXIV games will have been held in Los Angeles. Despite officially being the 34th Summer Olympics, only 31 events have actually been held as the VI Olympiad was cancelled due to World War I and the XII and XIII Olympiads were cancelled due to World War II. In addition, there will have been 25 Winter Olympic Games.

A number of cities have hosted the Olympics twice but only three will have hosted them three times by 2028 - London (1908, 1948, 2012), Paris (1900, 1924 and 2024) and Los Angeles (1934, 1984 and 2028). The IOC took the unusual step of allocating hosts for two future games (2024 and 2028) in September 2017. Athens hosted the games in 1896, 1906 and 2004 but the 1906 games were held to mark the 10th anniversary of the first Olympiad and are not counted as an official Olympiad.
