This is a photograph of the water runoff on Ayers Rock (known to the Aborigines as Urulu) in the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park after a rare rainstorm in the southwestern portion of the Northern Territory, Australia. It is close to the geographic center of Australia. Normally it is one of the most arid parts of Australia, and has no waterfalls. Ayers Rock is a 350 meter tall monolith made out of sandstone and is estimated to be over 600 million years old. Most of the rock actually sits underground and is estimated to be several kilometers deep. "When you came there it was Ayers Rock, still is, and always will be." Yes, ma'am! As long as YOU'RE happy. What does it matter if it was called Uluru by the indigenous people for a thousand years before Europeans ever invaded. The arrogance is appalling.

I was there for several days this Easter. In the past, some climbers would even defecate up there and when it rained the pollution would flow down into the waterholes, many of which were sacred and many are still used by the Anangu people today as meeting places. The tiny township of Yulara is about 18 km away from Uluru, and the small airport which is named 'Ayers Rock Airport' is about 3.5 km from the township. The nearest large town, Alice Springs, is 450 km away.

Bruce Means, actually, he does speak for all Australians. The rock is officially named “Uluru”. October 26th 1985, the government of Australia finally returned ownership of Uluru to the Anangu people. The return was part of the acknowledgement of their place as the original custodians of the land. However it wasn’t until 1995 that the name change officially took place. In this year, the name of the national park changed from Ayers Rock-Mount Olga National Park to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.
The change was put in place to show respect for the Anangu people and, specifically, to acknowledge their ownership of the land.
