For participation in the UK's involvement in the War in Afghanistan, three Victoria Crosses (VC) were awarded between 2006 and 2015. During this war, the Victoria Cross, Britain’s highest military honor, was awarded posthumously 2 times and finally to a lance corporal who was not killed.

The three VC award recipients are: Bryan Budd (1977 – 2006), James Ashworth (1989 – 2012), and Joshua Mark Leakey (born 1988). They all saved the lives of others. They had little or no regard for their own safety.

Corporal Budd from the 3rd Battalion, the Parachute Regiment was killed while performing duties in Afghanistan in Operation Herrick. He died of injuries sustained during a fire fight with Taliban forces in Sangin, Helmand Province. He died leading his men from the front, allowing them to get to safety.

Lance Corporal James Ashworth was killed in Afghanistan in June 2012. He led his fire team in an attack on an enemy held compound in the Nahri Saraj District of Helmand Province. He was serving as part of the Reconnaissance Platoon, 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards when he died.

The third VC recipent, Lance Corporal Joshua Mark Leakey, was working with a joint force of British, American, and Afghan troops near a small village south of the town of Nawzad in Helmand Province. His patrol came under attack. Because of the needs, though he was only a lance corporal, he took control of the situation and led his men down a hill to support and save others under attack.
