During the first season of U.S. TV "Monday Night Football" (MNF), Keith Jackson had the privilege of joining Howard Cosell and Don Mereith in the announcer's booth. ABC Sports producer Roone Arledge was the one who created the broadcast team of Howard Cosell, Keith Jackson, and Don Meredith. They were Monday Night Football's first broadcast team.

Looking to find instant success for the program, Arledge hired controversial New York City sportscaster Howard Cosell to be a commentator. Keith Jackson was picked because he was a veteran football play-by-play announcer. Arledge's first choice to be the third member of the trio was Frank Gifford. He was however unavailable because he was under contract to CBS Sports.

Gifford suggested former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Don Meredith. This set the stage for years of fireworks between the often pompous Cosell and the laid-back former football player from Texas, Meredith. Gifford was able to replace Jackson after the first year of MNF.

After thirteen years 1970 - 83), football remained on the field, and mayhem stayed in the broadcast booth and control room. MNF got huge ratings in morning papers after each Monday night game while Howard Cosell stayed in his ABC job for 12 years.
