Film director, Martin Scorsese, finally won the Academy Award for Best Director for the crime drama, The Departed (2006). After losing out five times, Martin Scorsese was awarded his first Oscar in 2007 for his mob informer movie.

Scorsese's first directing nomination was in 1981 for "Raging Bull." Some of his other nominations have included "The Last Temptation of Christ," "Goodfellas" and "Gangs of New York."

As of today, Scorsese at the age of 73 is the most nominated living director, and with his eight Best Director nominations, he is tied with director Billy Wilder, an Austrian-born American filmmaker, for the second most Oscar nominations overall.
