When the lake was originally completed in 1931 there were approximately 1350 miles of shoreline. In the 1970's Truman Dam was built taking part of the original lake to form Truman Reservoir for flood control, reducing the Lake to its current 1100 miles of shoreline.

The Lake of the Ozarks is a place where both fishing cabins and multi-million dollar homes can be found, and what was once a summer resort area is now a year round community. "The Lake" is known world-wide for one of the most popular party areas in the mid-west nicknamed "The Party Cove!"

The lake is contained by Bagnell Dam which is an electric generating dam in the city of Lake Ozark. Bagnell Dam is a concrete gravity dam, meaning the weight of the structure is enough to overcome the lateral force of the water pressing against it.
