Since its inception in 1992, only 6 teams have been ever present in the Premier League. The 6 teams are; Liverpool, Everton, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. Aston Villa had played in each season until their relegation in 2016.

In all 49 teams have spent at least one season in England's top tier of soccer, of those only six clubs have lifted the trophy. This season nine of the teams that played in the inaugural competition are competing, Manchester City, Crystal Palace and Southampton have been relegated at least once leaving the elite 6. The only winners of the Premier League are; Manchester United (13 times), Chelsea (5), Arsenal (3), Manchester City (2), Blackburn Rovers (1) and Leicester City (1).

The Premiership replaced the English 1st. Division, in a breakaway from the Football League, in order to take advantage of the substantial amounts of money being offered by television companies. The Football league had been formed in 1888 and at the time of the split the league was comprised of 92 clubs, 22 of which formed the Premier League. That number has since been reduced to 20 clubs playing each other home and away. Each season the bottom 3 teams are now relegated to the second tier, the Championship, with the top 3 from that competition being promoted.

In a strange twist of fate Leeds United won the final 1st Division title, only to be relegated in the Premier League's first season.
