How many United States military academies (service academies) are there?
United States service academies, also known as the United States military academies, are federal academies for the undergraduate education and training of commissioned officers for the United States Armed Forces.
There are five U.S. service academies:
- The United States Military Academy (USMA) in West Point, New York, founded in 1802.
- The United States Naval Academy (USNA) in Annapolis, Maryland, founded in 1845.
- The United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) in New London, Connecticut, founded in 1876.
- The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in Kings Point, New York, founded in 1943.
- The United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) in Colorado Springs, Colorado, founded in 1954.

I think Merchant Marines are considered military since service in that branch counted as military to keep the Vietnam draft from sending youth off to their deaths.

Liked it though I forgot about the Merchant Marien Academy at Kings Point. The Merchant Marne is considered a military academy.

I spent 30 years in the Air Force so I had no problem knowing the correct answer to this question. Plus I’ve served with many military members that have attended these academies.

lasherdonw, the question said service academes also; in addition the Merchant Marines can be armed in case of war. The candidates who enter the Merchant Marines when leaving the academy have any obligation to serve either in the Coast Guard or Navy, or Marine Corp (DoN) and those who do not are stuck with an eight year stint in the Naval Reserve. Yes, the Merchant Marines are part of the Military.
