I remember originally watching the film and the necessary explanation about why Ripley was willing to return to space was made clear in a brief scene where she is informed of the death of her then adult daughter, which eliminated her remaining tie to her present (of than, of course, taking care of Jones the cat, the only other survivor of the Nostromo).
